Yahoo Inc.’s chief executive told employees that no decision has been made yet in Microsoft Corp.’s unsolicited $44.6 billion bid for the company, but rival Google Inc. has meanwhile offered to “help” the company thwart the bid, according to reports Monday.

The Wall Street Journal said Mountain View-based Google’s CEO Eric Schmidt called Jerry Yang, his counterpart at Sunnyvale-based Yahoo to offer his company’s help.

Yang told his staff on Friday that the offer from Redmond, Wash.-based Microsoft was still being evaluated and “absolutely no decisions” had been reached.

Google itself would probably not bid for Yahoo because of regulatory concerns, but the Journal quoted people familiar with the matter saying the online giant could “play a role” in attempts by Yahoo to stay independent or by other companies to outbid Microsoft.

In a post on the company’s blog, Google said the offer “raises troubling questions” about Microsoft having too much power.

On its Web site, Yahoo said “a review process like this is fluid, and it can take quite a bit of time.”

In the e-mail to employees, Yahoo said the offer from Microsoft is “one of many options” it is considering to maximize value for employees and shareholders.
